Syria Ceasefire Conference in Astana is important step towards peace
On December 14, 2016, during a telephone conversation between President of Russia Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the two Heads of State agreed to invite the conflicting parties (Russia - the Syrian government and Turkey - representatives of the armed opposition) to continue the process of peace negotiations on a new platform, in addition to Geneva. Such a platform was called the capital of Kazakhstan - Astana. The proposal of Russian President Vladimir Putin to create an additional platform for the Syrian peace process in Astana was supported by President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev.
