SCO: heads of railway administrations outlined guidance for joint work
The second meeting of the heads of the railway administrations of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization members identified the need for joint work to figure out the priorities for cooperation to ensure the region’s transit potential is used to full extent, increase the competitiveness of rail transport of the SCO members, Strategy2050.kz reports.
Nur-Sultan hosted the second meeting of the heads of the railway administrations of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization members, where the importance of joint work of railways authorities in the best interests of the SCO members was emphasized.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization is an important contributor to multilateral cooperation and dialogue to address the pressing issues of trade and economic regional interaction.
Sauat Mynbayev, Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ) Board Chairman, stressed that developing transit corridors is of importance.
“One of the main areas of cooperation is the development of transport corridors allowing for fast and cheap logistics and more shipping”, he said.
Kazakhstan pays great attention to establishing favourable conditions to increase transit through the international transport corridors East-West, North-South, TRACECA.
Special attention is placed on infrastructure development. Owing to the measures being adopted, 8 months of 2019 have seen Kazakhstan’s transit grow by 35% compared to the same period of 2018.
The positive outcomes of the concerted work of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route are identified, with the Aktau and Kuryk sea ports with a total capacity of over 26 million tonnes being its key elements.
Transit tariffs through the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route to Europe, Turkey, and the Caucasus States to China have been reduced 3 times.
The meeting outlined the need for joint work to figure out the priorities for cooperation to ensure the region’s transit potential is used to full extent, increase the competitiveness of rail transport of the SCO members.
Sauat Mynbayev expressed confidence that the meeting of the heads of the railway administrations will give a great incentive to further interaction.
The meeting’s participants went over the implementation of the decisions adopted at the first meeting on September 2018 in Tashkent as well as approved the provisions for the Working Group and the Action Plan for the meeting of the heads of the railway administrations of the SCO members for 2020-22.
The draft Concept of the relationship between the railway administrations (railroads) of the SCO members in rail transport was passed.
Upon the totals of the meeting, the protocol was signed. The next meeting of the heads of the railway administrations of the SCO members will be hosted by Russia.
