Nur-Sultan named the greenest city of Islamic world
The Kazakh delegation led by Kazakh Ambassador to Egypt, Arman Issagaliyev, attended the 8th Islamic Conference of Ministries of Ecology taken place at the headquarters of the Islamic Organization of Science, Education and Culture (ISESCO) in the capital of Morocco, Rabat. The Conference held under the patronage of King of Morocco Mohammed VI was themed “The role of cultural and religious factors in environment protection and sustainable development”, Strategy2050.kz informs referring to the Kazakh Foreign Ministry’s press service.
The Conference merged delegations from 36 countries and 11 international organizations, where the current issues regarding the environment of the Islamic world, global warming, air and water contamination, as well as the elaboration of practical steps to improve Muslim countries’ policies in environment protection came under discussion. The discussions resulted in the adoption of strategic documents.
The Conference also saw the awarding ceremony to mark Muslim countries contributing to the protection of the environment.
“The ISESCO Commission commended the efforts of the Mayor’s Office of Nur-Sultan and awarded the capital city a prize in the nomination for the Greenest City of the Islamic World”, the statement reads.

In 2017, ISESCO with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia established a special prize to mark contributions to the environment protection, including making all segments of society responsible for environment, promoting cleanliness, using clean energy sources. The prize is presented to three cities of the Islamic world from Arab, African and Asian countries every year. This year the prize went to Nur-Sultan.
The ISESCO leadership said that naming Nur-Sultan, where the EXPO themed Future Energy took place in 2017, as well as different projects in environment protection and clean energy generation, the greenest capital of the Islamic world is fair.
Usually, ISESCO holds international conferences, exhibitions, events regarding environment protection and sustainable development in the city received the prize.
