Now we are 18.63m: Kazakhstan saw 1.3% growth in population over the year
As of January 1, 2020, there are 18.63 million people in Kazakhstan, more by 1.3%, or 236.6 thousand people compared to last year, Strategy2050.kz reports with reference to Finprom.kz.
There were year-on-year increases in urban and rural population by 1.8% and 0.5%, respectively, with urban residents making up 58.5% of the total population.
Of note is that the natural increase was 269.6 thousand people, however it reduced by 33 thousand due to migration.
The biggest rise in population occurred in both capitals: Nur-Sultan (+ 5.3%) and Almaty (+ 3.3%), while decline was observed in six regions: Northern Kazakhstan (−1%), Eastern Kazakhstan (−0.6%), Kostanay (−0.5%), Akmola (−0.3%), Pavlodar (−0, 2%) and Karaganda (−0.1%) regions.
The urban population is on the rise. By this year’s beginning, 10.89 million people have in cities, 1.8% more compared to last year.
Three regions saw a declining urban population, including Almaty (−1.3%), Pavlodar (−0.2%) and Akmola (−0.05%) regions.
There was a 0.5% increase in rural population, reaching 7.74 million people. Its share accounted for 41.5%. Eight regions recorded a reducing rural population.
