Kuryk port plans to boost capacity
Built at the instruction of former President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Kuryk port opened in 2016. Location in a natural bay provides favorable weather conditions for its operation allowing it to receive road and rail ferries all year round.
“By 2022-23, we plan to add 1.5-2 million tons of cargo capacity to the port. We implement these projects together with investors; they also see great potential for this," said Akhmetov.
The port is important for Kazakhstan, the world’s largest landlocked country. The port, located on the Caspian Sea in the Mangystau region, is, therefore, part of the country’s effort to transform into a Eurasian continental transport and logistics hub.
Oil products, chemical products, metal, consumer goods, are transshipped through the port of Kuryk, while food products, industrial equipment, construction materials, and other cargoes are imported through the port.
The territory of the ferry complex is functionally divided into several sections – one that serves railway ferries with accompanying infrastructure and another that serves automobile ferries.
The annual throughput capacity of the railway pier is estimated at 4.1 million tons. The average full processing time of a single-deck ferry is 6-8 hours and for a double-deck - 10-12 hours, which allows to process up to 5-8 ferries per day. The ferries can hold up to 54 railroad cars.
To facilitate the processing of cargo flow in customs clearance, the port opened a one-window shop stop.
The port management plans to boost cooperation with Iran, Russia, and Azerbaijan.
