Kazakhstan saw over 21 thou cybercrime incidents in 2019
In 2019, more than 21 thousand incidents of violation of information security were identified in Kazakhstan, with botnets as the most common cyber-attacks, Finprom.kz reports.
With over 17.7 thousand incidents a botnet, or zombie network, a network of computers infected with a malicious program allowing attackers to remotely control other people's machines without the knowledge of their owners, was the most common cyber-attack in the country. With the help of botnets, attackers can send spam, spread viruses, attack computers and servers, and commit other crimes.
The second most common cyber-attack was fishing: 883 cases. This computer fraud implies that the attacker gets access to the information he needs. This is a computer crime that is prosecuted. Today, fishing is one of the most widespread types of cybercrime in the world, and often responsible for stolen accounts and banking information.
Incidents such as malware, hacks on Internet resources, denial of service (DDoS attacks), etc. are also common.
Cybersecurity Ventures’ forecasts indicate that in 2019 hacker attacks around the world occurred every 14 seconds, and by 2021 they will occur every 11 seconds. It is also projected that by 2021, the global damage from cybercrime will reach $6 trillion.
Over the past few years, Kazakhstan has developed basic conceptual approaches to the development of the country's cyber security sphere. One of the significant events is the approval of the Kazakhstan Cybershield concept of cybersecurity.
The objectives of the concept are to achieve and maintain the level of security of electronic information resources, information systems and information and communication infrastructure from external and internal threats, ensuring sustainable development of the country in the context of global competition.

• increased awareness of information security threats by 20% compared to the base period of 2018;
• the number of retrained specialists in the field of information security in 2022 should reach 800 people;
• increased share of domestic software products in the field of informatization and communications used in the state and quasi-state sectors in 2022 by 50% compared to the base period of 2017;
• the share of information systems of state bodies, non-state information systems integrated with state information systems of critical information and communication infrastructure facilities connected to information security monitoring centres should be 80% by 2021, and 100% by 2022.
