Kazakhstan saw cash withdrawals using ATMs worth 14trl tenge in last year

2019 saw 29.8 million card holders throughout Kazakhstan, 57% up than a year earlier. There were 32 million payment cards in circulation, 37% more than in December 2018, of which 18.2 million actively used cards, 59.4% more than last year, Strategy2050.kz reports with reference to Finprom.kz.

Banks prefer cash-in ATMs as their share of the ATM fleet grew from 28% to 40% over the year.

The share of local systems among card holders at the end of December 2019 amounted to 16.6%, among cards in circulation - 15.7%, and among used cards - 23.1%, while a year earlier the indicator was only 0, 1–0.2%.

In 2019 the number of ATMs in the country was 11.3 thousand, increasing by 2.7% compared to last year. The growth was due to an increase in the number of ATMs with cash-in function by 49.2%, to 4.6 thousand, the share of which rose from 27.8% to 40.4%.

The year also saw the decreased number of ATMs without the function of receiving cash by 15.2%, to 6.7 thousand.

The amount of cash issued in Kazakhstan using payment cards of Kazakhstan and foreign issuers for January-December 2019 amounted to 15.9 trillion tenge, thus rising by 20% compared to the same period of 2018.

The share of cash withdrawals using an ATM network accounts for 86.5% of the total, or 13.8 trillion tenge; a year earlier - 85.4%, or 11.3 trillion tenge.

By region, the biggest amount of cash disbursements for 2019 fell on Almaty (4.1 trillion tenge) and Nur-Sultan (1.8 trillion tenge). Also, more than a trillion tenge of cash was issued in Turkestan region and Shymkent (1.6 trillion tenge) and Karaganda region (1.1 trillion tenge).

The regions also have the biggest number of ATMs: 2.2 thousand in Almaty, 1.3 thousand in Nur-Sultan, 956 in the Karaganda region, 914 in Turkestan region and Shymkent.
