Kazakhstan, Penal Reform International discussed cooperation issues

29 January, 2020 15:20

Senate Vice Speaker Askar Shakirov met with Regional Director of the ‘Penal Reform International’ Office for Central Asia Azamat Shambilov due to completion of his mission in this position, Strategy2050.kz reports with reference to the Senate’s press service.

During the meeting, the two sides noted the effectiveness of cooperation between Kazakhstan and this international organization.

The Senate Vice Speaker mentioned the active participation of Penal Reform International in the reforming of Kazakhstan’s penal system, the training of prison officials, the development of the probation service, the re-socialization of convicts, and familiarization with the best practices in the execution of sentences.

It was also emphasized that the PRI Office is one of the main participants in the creation and establishment of the national preventive mechanism (NPM) in Kazakhstan, both in its legislative consolidation and in its practical implementation. Currently, NPM in Kazakhstan is an example of interaction between government bodies and civil society, as well as one of the most effective ways of public control over closed institutions.

Shambilov praised the ongoing reforms in Kazakhstan aimed at improving criminal justice and law enforcement. Recent laws adopted in the country, in his opinion, constitute a solid legal basis for the implementation of these reforms.

At the end of the meeting, the parties expressed the need for further development of fruitful cooperation, including in the legislative sphere.
