Kazakhstan is among top 10 for mathematics and science – Education Ministry
According to Kazakh Education Minister Askhat Aimagambetov Kazakhstan on average takes part in 5 comparative studies in secondary education, they are PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment), TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study), PIRLS (Progress in International Reading Literacy Study).
“PIRLS put our country 27th according to reading comprehension and literacy, while we are among top 10 countries in TIMSS according to academic knowledge in mathematics and natural sciences,” the education minister said.
In order to teach students to turn the knowledge into action the updated content of education seeks to develop critical thinking and skills since 2016.
In the Global Competitiveness Index the Education Ministry and Science is responsible for 8 pillars.
“Of the 8 pillars, Kazakhstan climbed 7 positions up from 102 to 92 according to the quality of vocational education, according to the critical thinking in teaching pillar the country improved its position climbing 1 position up from 46 to 45 compared with 2017. Kazakhstan’s positions on the expected years of schooling and citation of publications remained 53rd and 110th respectively,” the minister said.
QS World University Rankings and Times Higher Education are major rankings in higher education.
According to the minister, Kazakhstan demonstrates positive dynamics in QS rankings as 5 Kazakh universities were found in the list in 2011 and their number has grown to 10 in 2019. The Kazakh leading universities include al-Farabi Kazakh National University (207th), L.N.Gumilyev Eurasian National University (418th), M.Auezov South Kazakhstan National University (491st).
2018 saw the two Kazakh universities be recognized by Times Higher Education for the first time, they are al-Farabi Kazakh National University and L.N.Gumilyev Eurasian National University
According to the education minister, the efforts to improve Kazakhstan’s positions in international rankings according to the quality and accessibility of education and science will continue under the State Programme for the promotion of education and science and other systematic actions.
