Kazakhstan became member of CORSIA
Today, the Aviation Administration of Kazakhstan held a webinar with the industry on the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), Strategy2050.kz reports with the reference to the Civil Aviation Committee.
Currently, civil aviation accounts for up to 2% of global CO2 emissions from human activities. Considering the impact of the aviation sector on the environment, in October 2016, by Resolution 39 of the Assembly of the ICAO, in order to "address any annual increase in total CO2 emissions from international flights", a global market based measure CORSIA was approved.
CORSIA, is a part of the ICAO basket of climate mitigation measures, is designed to ensure carbon neutrality by offsetting CO2 emissions from international flights. The goal is to reduce aviation net CO2 emissions to 50% of 2005 emissions. This means improving fuel efficiency and stabilizing CO2 emissions.
Aircraft operators must monitor CO2 emissions from all international flights. Based on data for 2019 and 2020 international flights, CORSIA will determine the baseline. Considering the baseline, compensatory measures will be applied.
CORSIA has three implementation phases starting from 2021. Starting from 2026, participation in the program is mandatory for all international flights.
The Civil Aviation Committee of the MIID of the Republic of Kazakhstan and Aviation Administration of Kazakhstan have been working for some time with ICAO experts on issues of carbon offsetting and reduction for international aviation.
In June 2020, Peter Griffiths, Director General of the Aviation Administration of Kazakhstan, has officially confirmed ICAO's voluntary participation in CORSIA in a letter to Dr. Fan Liu, ICAO Secretary General.
To date, 85 States, representing 76.76% of International Aviation Activities, have expressed their willingness to participate in the voluntary phase (2021-2023).
