Kazakh-United Nations coop discussed with UN representatives
The Central Communications Service under the President of Kazakhstan has held a press conference devoted to the results of the cooperation of the United Nations and the Kazakh Government relating to the Sustainable Development Goals’ achievement, Strategy2050.kz correspondent reports.
The press conference was joined by Mr. Norimasa Shimomura, UN Resident Coordinator in Kazakhstan, Giulia Vallese, Representative of UNFPA for Kazakhstan and Country Director for Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan, Mr. Yakup Beris, UNDP Resident Representative in Kazakhstan, Elaine Conkievich, United Nations (UN) Women Representative in Kazakhstan, Mr. Artur van Diesen, Chairman of the UNICEF in Kazakhstan.
Opening the press conference, Mr. Shimomura pointed out to his support for Kazakhstan’s aspiration to join top 30 countries of the world through achieving the OECD standards.
“The UN in Kazakhstan firmly supports the country’s aspiration towards the list of 30 top countries of the world by achieving the OECD standards. We are certain that the Global agenda on sustainable development until 2030 and its 17 SDGs are a good instrument to help Kazakhstan effectively implement its aspirations in development set in the 2050 Strategy and follow-up reform programmes”, he said.
Since 2015, the country has been demonstrating the strong commitment to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. As of today, about 80% of the SDGs are integrated into the strategic State documents of Kazakhstan’s development. The country has established a national mechanism for coordinating those goals, an active work towards nationalizing and localizing the SDG objectives and indicators is under way with support of the UN.
Marking the 25 years of the ratification of the Convention of the Rights of the Child, Kazakhstan adopted the international commitments to achieving gender equality under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discriminations against Women and the Beijing Declaration and the Platform of Action aimed at expanding the engagement of women in decision-making, preventing violence against women and girls, ensuring the equal participation in labour market and equal payment.
“UNDP provides considerable support to Kazakhstan in institutional and biodiversity development”, Mr. Yakup Beris said.
With the UN’s support, the Kazakh Government carries out the Concept for the country’s transition to a green economy, adopts active measures to combat corruption, build a professional, open and subordinate State apparatus, including by undertaking administrative reforms, reforms in governance as well as legal reforms.
The country was able to increase the quality of public services, with most of them being provided in digital form.
Mr. Artur van Diesen marked that one of the main achievements of Kazakhstan is the decrease in child mortality by 5-fold.
“Kazakhstan on its way to an inclusive society should pay attention to every child with physical or mental disabilities”, he urged.
We note that during his state visit to New-York, Kazakh Head of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev attended the 74th session of the UN General Assembly, where he put forward some initiatives to provide global security and sustainable development as well as on the creation of a sustainable development centre for Central Asian countries and Afghanistan in the confines of the building of international organizations opened in Kazakhstan in May this year.
