Kazakh Foreign Ministry, UN Office on Drugs and Crime discussed coop
Kazakh Foreign Minister Mukhtar Tleuberdi and Ms. Ashita Mittal, Regional Representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime held a meeting on 29 October 2019 in the Kazakh capital of Nur-Sultan, the press service of the Kazakh foreign minister informs.
The meeting touched upon the on-going projects of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in Kazakhstan, as well as the perspectives for further strengthening interaction and agreed to initiate new projects in counter-terrorism and crime prevention. The work of Almaty’s Central Asian Regional Information and Coordination Center for Combating Illicit Trafficking of Narcotic Drugs, Psychotropic Substances and their Precursors also came under discussion.
On the next day, the round table dubbed “Perspectives of the development of a criminal policy against extremism and terrorism in Kazakhstan” took place, which saw the presentation of an analytical review of the UN 19th counter-terrorism convention as well as the outcomes of revision studies of extremist and terrorist crimes in Kazakhstan.
As part of Ms. Ashita Mittal’s visit to Kazakhstan, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime’s delegation is due to hold meetings with government bodies to discuss the ways of intensifying the criminal justice system of Kazakhstan, as well as to visit the places of detention in Karaganda region on 31 October to 1 November 2019.
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime is carrying out several major projects including “Support for the efforts on work with prisoners charged on extremist and terrorism crimes and the prevention of radicalization in places of detention” aimed at returning the children from combat zones in Syria under the humanitarian operation Zhusan, the project named “Prevention of and response to recruitment and exploitation of children by terrorist and extremist groups.”
