Investments in environmental protection sector doubled over the year
According to the results of eight months, electricity production by renewable energy facilities increased by 30% compared to last year, Strategy2050.kz refers to Finprom.kz.
In 2018, there was a significant increase in investments aimed at protecting the environment. The annual growth of the indicator exceeded 2.4 times - from 32.5 billion tenge in 2017 to 80.2 billion tenge in 2018.
The growth trend remains unchanged this year. According to the results of eight months of 2019, investments aimed at protecting the environment amounted to 74.6 billion tenge, an increase of 2 times compared to the same period a year earlier (36.8 billion tenge).
In September this year, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has approved the allocation of funds to support renewable energy facilities in Kazakhstan in the amount of up to 300 million euros. The allocated funds will allow the country to promote more projects in the field of solar, wind and hydropower, as well as biogas, which will help reduce CO2 emissions by at least 500 thousand tons per year. The development of Kazakhstan's renewable energy facilities will help increase the share of “clean” energy production to 3% of all electricity generation by 2020 and to 5% by 2050.
To date, the EBRD has invested more than 8.3 billion euros in 262 projects in the economy of Kazakhstan. More than 2 billion euros from this funding supported the transition to a green economy.
In January – August of the current year, the largest volume of investments aimed at protecting the environment was in Atyrau region: 25.1 billion tenge (a year earlier — 5.6 billion tenge). Among the leaders are also Akmola and Aktobe regions - 13.4 billion and 10.4 billion tenge, respectively. The TOP-5 regions for investments in Kyzylorda (5.9 billion tenge) and Karaganda (5.7 billion tenge) regions are closed.
According to the report “Analysis of the Electricity and Coal Market of Kazakhstan” prepared by Samruk-Energy JSC, as of August 1, 2019, 77 RES facilities are operating in Kazakhstan. Over the seven months of this year, renewable energy facilities generated 1032.2 million kWh of electric energy - 30.3% more than the same period last year (791.9 million kWh).
Most of the electricity was produced by small hydropower plants: 486.7 million kWh (a year earlier - 493.1 million kWh). Wind farms generated 486.5 million kWh of electricity (a year earlier - 224.7 million kWh), and solar - 194 million kWh (a year earlier - 74.1 million kWh).
At the end of 2018, the installed capacity of renewable energy facilities amounted to 531 MW - 55.1% more than in the previous year (342.3 MW). In general, in 2018, the production of electricity by renewable energy facilities amounted to 1.4 billion kWh, an increase of 22.6% compared to the same period last year (1.1 billion kWh).
