GPS sensors to track waste disposal in Kazakhstan
9,246 illegal landfills were identified thanks to space monitoring in 2019, Minister of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources Magzum Mirzagaliyev informed during the reporting meeting, Strategy2050.kz reports.
“The Governor’s Offices approved roadmaps for the elimination of illegal landfills. 30% of 9 thousand have already been liquidated”, Mirzagaliyev said.
According to him, in order to avoid the formation of such landfills, garbage collection vehicles will be equipped with GPS sensors to track garbage collection. This norm will be implemented after the introduction of the new Environmental Code.
According to the Ministry, many illegal landfills were found in Akmola region - 1576 and in Karaganda region - 1081.
“High MSW processing is observed in Mangistau, Almaty regions, in the city of Shymkent, low - in Akmola, East Kazakhstan and West Kazakhstan region”, the Minister said.
It should be noted that in 2019, as part of the UNIDO (UN) project, the Ministry concluded an agreement to transfer to Kazakhstan a hazardous waste disposal facility.
