First in Kazakhstan genomic laboratory researches liability to diseases
The genomic laboratory, opened in the hospital of the Presidential Administration's Medical Center, conducts research on a predisposition for the development of cancer, diabetes, Down syndrome, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and a number of other serious diseases at the DNA level. Their early diagnosis will help to correct lifestyles to prevent complications and fatal outcome. This was stated by director of the hospital of the Medical Center of the Presidential Administration of Kazakhstan, Valery Benberin, the Strategy2050.kz correspondent reports.
“35 percent of the disease development depends on a genetic predisposition, the rest is a lifestyle, a living environment. Having learned about your risks, there is an opportunity to adjust your lifestyle, diet, and eliminate stresses”, Benberin said at a presentation of laboratory's services.
According to him, such studies have helped reduce the most common cancer - breast cancer in the United States by 23%, and in Europe to 30%. He also added that the identified risk to cancer does not mean that it will necessarily develop.
In addition, in the laboratory it is possible to carry out prenatal studies that will help specify the presence of a pathology of fetation even before “planting” it in the womb.
By the way, according to the director, each embryo has a risk of developing pathology of 4%. This percentage can be increased due to other factors, such as heredity and maternal age.
“This technique increases the chances of pregnancy, reduces the number of ineffective IVF cycles and preserves a woman’s health (due to a decrease in the amount of hormones taken)”, Valery Benberin emphasized.
According to him, genomic diagnosis specialists are the first in Kazakhsta who have begun to conduct this type of research.
It should be noted that studies in the laboratory of personalized genomic diagnostics of the hospital of the Medical Center are carried out on equipment that has no analogues in Kazakhstan. The laboratory was opened in November 2018 and has already conducted more than 4 thousand studies.
