Almaty represents one fifth of GDP - Tokayev
Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has attended a meeting on the city’s development in Almaty, the President’s Press Secretary Berik Uali wrote on his Facebook page, Strategy2050.kz informs.
Opening the meeting, the President stressed that Almaty observed the adoption of the significant and historic decisions on the country’s fate.
“Almaty is a sacred place, built on the basis of independent Kazakhstan. Today’s Almaty is developing as a hub of education, science, culture and business. The recent years have seen new areas be added, thus doubling the size of the city,” the President said.
The number of citizens of Almaty has increased by 20%, reaching 1 million 800 thousand people.
According to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Almaty and Nur-Sultan contributes to one third of the total gross domestic product of the country.
“The city represents one fifth of gross domestic product, over 20% of government revenue and 60% of the credits provided by the banks. On top of that, over 40% of the country’s wholesale and retail trade, and around 15% of the foreign trade turnover take place in Almaty. The city has turned into a regional hub for investors as it houses head offices of banks, international organizations and transnational companies,” the Head of State said.
He went on to say that 11 United Nations offices located in the city have become a regional hub for Central Asia.
“The tremendous work on the economic, social and environmental issues of the city was completed, and should be continued,” the President said.
