5G network is available commercially in Kazakhstan

KazakhTeleCom, Kazakhstan’s telecommunication company, has launched the first commercial 5G network within the Digital Bridge Forum taking place in the Kazakh capital, Nur-Sultan. 5G technology is available via Altel and Tele2 networks in the confines of the Astana Hub IT Startup International Technology Park, Strategy2050.kz correspondent reports.

The company has provided 5G technology coverage in a Non-Stand-Alone mode in within the frequency band of 3.5 GHz, which is the most recommended and popular frequency band for 5G technologies worldwide. Such technology is available for users of devices with 5G and Altel and Tele2 subscribers.

“The network launched today is the first commercial 5G zone, that will available within Astana Hub on a regular basis. The place was not chosen by chance, it is here that developers could test and implement new digital products and projects based on 5G. There will be the same zones in other regions for different cases. We are planning to launch commercial technology in the city of Shymkent to implement a FWA (Fixed Wireless Access) business case,” Nurlan Mairmanov, Head Director for Innovations at KazakhTeleCom, said.

5G technology offers fast data transfer, large capacity and reliable connection alongside less lapses and mass connection of IoT (Internet of things) devices to tackle various tasks.

The 5G commercial network is based on the infrastructure of Altel and KazakhTeleCom, Roman Volodin said, Director-General of Mobile TeleCom Service.

“Altel is a technological leader in mobile internet and information transfer in the country. Its specialists were the first to launch 3G and 4G networks in Kazakhstan. As the period of new technology comes and our company once again pioneers in the sphere,” he said.

5G technology will be available for mobile, internet users, IoT, Smart city, smart production cases as well as for other purposes, with 5G networks becoming the backbone of digital transformation of companies and development of digital economy.

The company shared its plans to launch 5G zones in the cities of Almaty and Shymkent.

“This day will go down in the history. We waited for over several years for this to happen. In 2017, we implemented the first virtual core needed for 5G under support of Huawei. The first network is available here [Astana Hub], Almaty and Shymkent are next. 5G zones will be in line with the Hot Spot principle, meaning they will be installed in most uploaded locations whether a cluster or corporate segments,” he said.

2-3 countries have launched 5G networks worldwide, now it is available in Kazakhstan. During the Digital Bridge Forum the network will be operational on a permanent basis, which is good news for specialists working in IT and startup spheres.

“We are glad that the launch took place during the Digital Bridge technological forum,” Adlet Nurgozhin, Executive Director of the Astana Hub IT Startup International Technology Park, said.

The Kazakh capital of Nur-Sultan is hosting the Digital Bridge International Technology Forum on 24-25 October 2019. The Forum features the Digital Health Astana 2.0 exhibition, where the latest achievements in artificial intelligence are on display.

It is the second time such a forum taking place in Kazakhstan, with the first held on 5 November 2018. This year’s Forum was initiated by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in an effort to support young IT specialists.
