Kazakhstan, COPUOS step up space cooperation, sign memorandum

The 62nd meeting of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) saw the signing of a memorandum held in Vienna attended by the Kazakh delegation led by Kazakh Digital Development Defense and Aerospace Industry Minister Marat Nurguzhin, the press release of the National Space Agency of Kazakhstan reads.

The meeting heard the vice minister’s report about Kazakhstan’s efforts in the peaceful use of outer space, including the space system of scientific and technological use.  

In a meeting with Simonetta Di Pippo, Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), the sides went over the current cooperation issues, the memorandum of mutual understanding was signed off.

“This memorandum will be a good foundation to develop cooperation between the Digital Development, Defense and Aerospace Industry Ministry and the United Nations in space,” Marat Nurguzhin said.

The document lays down future cooperation in the area of use of space information to fight natural disasters. To meet the sustainable development goals, it was decided to facilitate the implementation of innovations in the space sector, upskill scholars, students and other specialists, encourage their engagement in joint scientific and research events and projects as well.

The Kazakh delegation also held bilateral meetings with the director general of the UAE Space Agency, the director general of the Royal Jordanian Geography Center, the general secretary of the Asia Pacific Space Cooperation Organization, the head of the Space Agency of Peru and the director of CONIDA, Peru. A working meeting with the representatives of Japan’s Space Agency JAXA also took place.

The Kazakh vice minister invited the participants of the meeting and the heads of the Space Agencies to visit the 7th International Forum “Space Days in Kazakhstan”, to take place in October 2019 in the Kazakh capital of Nur-Sultan.
