Chairmanship in UN Security Council: Kazakhstan tries to restore trust between members of international community
President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev, Minister of Foreign Affairs Kairat Abdrakhmanov, as well as his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov and other officials will take part in the Security Council meetings this month, according to the official website of the UN News Service.
"From the very beginning, when we only joined the non-permanent members of the Security Council, we have already determined our role to become the country that will try to look for compromise options, try to unite the various countries on a common platform to find solutions to those pressing problems that exist today", Umarov said.
The priorities of Kazakhstan in the Security Council were also formulated and designated by our President in the political appeal of Nursultan Nazarbayev to the UN Security Council under the title "Kazakhstan's conceptual vision of strengthening global partnership for building a safe, right and prosperous world".
"The political appeal of the President has become an official document of the Security Council and was circulated among the members of the Security Council, that is why we are currently working on precisely these priorities", he said.
On the initiative of Kazakhstan, for the first time in the history of the United Nations, a ceremony was organized to raise the flags of the newly elected six non-permanent members of the Security Council. We wanted to launch a new UN tradition that, in my opinion, is deeply symbolic, because election to the Security Council, albeit not on an ongoing basis, is a great honor, responsibility and high trust.
The Republic of Kazakhstan will have three key events. On January 18, a high-level thematic debate will be held on the topic of non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and confidence-building measures. This meeting will be chaired by President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev. As expected, other States will be represented at the level of Heads of State and Ministers of Foreign Affairs.
"We will discuss the issues of conflict prevention and peacekeeping, which practically goes in unison with the paradigm of the program document of the Head of our State called "Manifesto. The World. The XXIst century", as well as with those key priorities based on the principles of equal and mutually beneficial cooperation, respect and observance of international law, the resolution of any conflicts through diplomatic efforts, through dialogue and the search for mutually acceptable solutions", Kairat Umarov emphasized.
The second big topic is building a regional partnership in Afghanistan and Central Asia as a model for the interdependence of security and development. Kazakhstan will be represented by Minister of Foreign Affairs Kairat Abdrakhmanov, who will chair this event. Ministers from Central Asia and Afghanistan are expected to attend.
At both events, on January 18 and 19, UN Secretary-General, Mr. Guterres, will be the keynote speaker. Also expected the participation of Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Mr. Lavrov.
In addition, certainly, on January 25 it is planned to hold quarterly open debates on the situation in the Middle East, including the question of Palestine. The key direction for Kazakhstan is, undoubtedly, the Astana process, as well as talks on Syria.
"We are very grateful to those States that are making active efforts in this direction today. The main interested countries of the Astana process are Russia, Turkey and Iran. In addition, there are other initiatives: the United States is trying to help solve this problem, Jordan. There are many other sites, including the Moscow platform, the Kabul process, and the Istanbul process. Naturally, this is the Geneva site - the Astana and Geneva platforms are working on a mutually complementary basis", the Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to the UN said.
Another priority will be actively discussed during the chairmanship of our country - this, of course, is the issue of Africa. Questions relating to the African continent and all those peacekeeping operations that are taking place there will be considered.
