Nursultan Nazarbayev to deliver speech in UN Security Council on non-proliferation of nuclear weapons

3 January, 2018 11:19
The non-proliferation of nuclear weapons will be one of the main topics of discussion in the Security Council in January. It was announced on Tuesday by Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to the UN, President of the Security Council Kairat Umarov in January at a press-conference at the UN headquarters in New York.

The Ambassador spoke about the work of the Security Council for the coming month and, in particular, noted that on January 18 the Council will hold a high-level thematic briefing on the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. The Heads of State and Ministers from a number of countries will take part in it. President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev will deliver speech at the briefing, according to the website of the UN News Center.

"Why did we decide to raise this issue? We believe that today we need to pay more attention to building trust relations between different political leaders, between countries. Without this, we believe that it is impossible to solve any issues. And I think that this is what the world lacks right now", Ambassador Kairat Umarov said.

Umarov stated that on January 19 in the Security Council, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Kairat Abdrakhmanov will chair at ministerial-level debates on strengthening regional cooperation between Afghanistan and the countries of Central Asia. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will deliver speech at the meeting. The Head of the UN visited Central Asia last summer.

According to the Ambassador of Kazakhstan, the Middle East, including the Palestinian issue, will be the third most important topic on the Security Council's working agenda in January. Teh members of the Security Council, according to Umarov, will also discuss the situation in Syria. He recalled that in December 2017 in Astana there was another meeting on Syria. In the UN it was called "productive".

We note that for the first time Kazakhstan became a member of the Security Council and for the first time chairs in it. Kazakhstan also became the first of the Central Asian countries elected as a non-permanent member of the Security Council.
