Capacity of seaports to increase to 26mln tons by 2020

The throughput capacity of seaports in the Caspian Sea will be brought up to 26 million tons of cargo a year, Deputy Chairman of the Transport Committee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Dmitry Potlov said at a briefing in the Government.

As he informed, in November 2017 the work on the implementation of the construction project of the second tracks on the Almaty-Shu section, with a total length of 112.37 km, has been completed. The implementation of the project increased the throughput capacity of the section from 17 to 68 pairs of trains per day and reduced the train time 1.5 times.

He also noted that the rail ferry terminal, launched in December 2016 in the port of Kuryk, with a capacity of 4 million tons, began operating on March 24 of this year and from the beginning of its operations about 1.3 million tons of cargo was transshipped.

"Over the first 11 months of this year, about 1.3 million tons of cargo (18,831 wagons) were transshipped through this terminal. The main nomenclature of cargo is oil products (gasoil), consumer goods, chemicals, equipment and metal products. By the end of the year, it is planned to transship 1.4 million tons. Also this year the construction of the second phase of the Kuryk port - the automobile ferry terminal - has begun, within the framework of which the dredging of the port water area has been completed, construction of hydraulic structures, additional facilities, service facilities and transport facilities is underway. 759 people and 243 units of equipment, are involved in construction works", Dmitry Potlov said.

He also noted that on December, 6 this year. in the framework of the Industrialization Day, a test launch of an automobile ferry terminal in the port of Kuryk was carried out.

"The completion of the construction of the facilities of the second phase is scheduled for 2018. The designed capacity of the automobile ferry terminal will total 2 million tons of cargo per year. In general, after completion of the project, the capacity of seaports in the Caspian Sea will be brought to 26 million tons of cargo per year. To implement the project this year, 50 billion tenge was allocated from the budget, of which to date 43.7 billion tenge (87%) has been applied", he added.

Also, according to Potlov, 16.9 billion tenge was allocated from the National Fund to complete the project, which are funded to complete the construction of hydraulic structures, equipment for inspection control systems, the alarm system, centralization and blocking on the railway tracks, power facilities, as well as the implementation of the automated terminal management system at the port of Kuryk.
