12 states partook in 18th Meeting of FNCA in Astana

In 2000, at the initiative of the Japan Nuclear Energy Commission, the Forum for Nuclear Cooperation in Asia (FNCA) was established to ensure effective cooperation in the field of nuclear and radiation technologies among the countries of the Asia-Pacific region.

The forum was created by the decision of the annual conference of the major specialists of Asian countries, who set the peaceful use of nuclear technologies and atomic energy as a fundamental task.

Currently, the Forum has 12 participating countries: Australia, Bangladesh, China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Thailand, the Philippines and Japan.

The Republic of Kazakhstan became a full member of the FNCA in 2010 and takes an active part in the work of the Forum. Today, FNCA member-countries cooperate in 8 areas: radiation oncology, mutational breeding, radiation safety and management of radioactive waste, physical nuclear safety and guarantees, the use of research reactors, biofertilizers, the use of electron accelerators, and the study of global climate change.

Participation in the activities of the Forum facilitates the promotion of new methods in the field of nuclear medicine in Kazakhstan and the production of new materials for agriculture, allows us to re-evaluate our approaches in the field of radiation safety and radiation waste management, expand our knowledge in the use of research reactors and electronic accelerators, and strengthens our confidence in choosing the right path in the field of nuclear physical security and non-proliferation.

The work of the Forum includes a three-level system of interaction of the participating countries: an annual meeting at the governmental level with the participation of ministers; annual meetings of coordinators and senior officials; seminars of leaders of joint projects on which issues of implementation of these projects are considered.
