18 zoos exist in Kazakhstan
At year-end 2019, there were 18 zoos in Kazakhstan, 11 of them - petting zoos. All of them are located in 9 regions of Kazakhstan. 13 zoos ranked to small business, 3 - to medium and 2 - to large business, Strategy2050.kz has learnt from Energyprom.kz.
A year earlier, there were 20 zoos, 13 of which were petting.
It should be reminded that Russia has banned petting zoos since this year.
Unfortunately, there is no such law in Kazakhstan, but the issue has already been raised. So, after a tragic story with keeping lion and tiger cubs in unacceptable conditions in Almaty, the city authority proposed closing all petting zoos that have predatory animals.
The total area of zoos in 2019 reached 100.3 hectares - 1.2% more than in 2018 (99.1 hectares). On this space there were houses for animals, birds and fish with an area of 56.3 thousand square meters.
The largest total area of houses for animals, birds and fish is in Shymkent (21 thousand square meters, 1 zoo), Almaty (20.9 thousand square meters, 2 zoos) and Karaganda region (8.2 thousand square meters, 4 zoos).
By the number of species of animals, birds and fish in the zoos, Almaty is in the lead: 383 species. Among them, 75 species of mammals, 118 species of birds.
On the second place is Shymkent. The zoo of this region is home to 266 species of animals, birds and fish, the list of which includes 71 species of mammals, 89 species of birds, 28 species of reptiles, 3 species of amphibians, 70 species of fish and 5 species of invertebrates.
Karaganda region closes TOP-3: 257 species of animals, birds and fish, including 78 species of mammals, 72 species of birds, 30 species of reptiles, 9 species of amphibians, 58 species of fish and 10 species of invertebrates.
The total number for 2019 amounted to 16.6 thousand animals, birds and fish - 5.2% less than a year earlier.
In 2019, 1.7 million people visited Kazakhstan's zoos, annual growth was 2.6%. More than 4 thousand excursions were held and 30 exhibitions were organized for visitors.
