Astana Mayor met with Secretary General of Mayors for Peace
"I am sincerely glad to welcome you in Astana with this very responsible mission to promote the ideals of peaceful co-existence. You are participating in the scientific responsible and important conference, and I want again sincerely welcome you. You know very well that Kazakhstan since the first days of its independence is committed to the ideals of peaceful co-existence and one of the first after the collapse of the Soviet Union renounced its nuclear potential," I.Tasmagambetov said.
The Mayors for Peace is composed of cities around the world that have formally expressed support for the program Mayor Araki announced in 1982. As of August 1, 2014, membership stood at 6,206 cities in 160 countries and regions. tThe International organization registered as a NGO in Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council in May 1991.
The Mayors for Peace, through close cooperation among the cities, strives to raise international public awareness regarding the need to abolish nuclear weapons and contributes to the realization of genuine and lasting world peace by working to eliminate starvation and poverty, assist refugees fleeing local conflict, support human rights, protect the environment, and solve the other problems that threaten peaceful coexistence within the human family.
Astana joined the movement "Mayors for Peace" in August 2012 and became the 110th of the capital among the cities of the organization. "Mayors for Peace" includes such Kazakh cities like Almaty, Ayagoz, Karaganda, Kurchatov, Pavlodar, Ridder, Families, Serebryansk Bowl, Shemonaikha, Ust-Kamenogorsk, Zaisan, Zyryanovsk.
