Kazakhstan launched ecologic corridor

“Irgiz-Torgai-Zhylanshyk” ecologic corridor, total area of which is over two million hectares is formed for the first time in Kazakhstan, the Kazakh Ministry of Environment and Water Resources informed.

“The ecologic corridor covers territories of Irgiz-Torgaisky natural reservation and public wildlife reservation "Altyn Dala" (Kostanay region.) It was created with the purpose of providing for positional connection to protect natural migration routes and the Betpakdala saiga calving," the authority reports.

It should be noted that state of steppe ecosystems, soils and climate were taking into account while the establishment of an ecological tunnel is considered, and data for satellite monitoring saiga were also used. Analysis of scientific data and cartographic material allowed us to determine the territory of the ecological corridor.

This work was carried out within the framework of the joint project of the Global Environment Facility, UNDP and the Committee of Forestry and Hunting of the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources of Kazakhstan on steppe ecosystem conservation and sustainable management. As a result of the work area of steppe ecosystems under protection increased from 2.4 to 4.8 million hectares,"a statement reads.

To date the number of the Betpakdala saiga is 216 thousand units.
